Goodwin's theory

Andrew Goodwin

Goodwin says that music videos are a form of advertising and marketing.

Goodwin talks about the characteristics that's normally shown in music videos

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal videos, dance routine in girl (boy) band.
2. There is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals, the lyrics either illustrate, amplify or contradict the visuals.
3. This also applies for music and the video.
4. The demands of the record level will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work. (a visual style)
5. Another characteristics is voyeurism. There is a frequent notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
6. There is often inter textual reference made to films, TV programs or other music videos.

He also mentions what is the relationship of the lyrics to the visuals and the music to the visuals?
  • Visuals create more measuring to the lyrics.
  • Visuals explain the lyrics and the visuals go to the beat of the music
  • Visuals are literal, they have different interpretation.

First day shooting-Drama room

In Today's lesson we started to shoot for our music video. We started shooting in the drama room. We had to delay the shooting for the drama room as we weren't able to get the room for the day we wanted to film. We used two cameras and the lights to shoot this part. We used a lot of different camera movements, zooms and shot from different angles. We are pleased with what we have right now and hope that as we continue to film it will work out the way we are want it to.
