3/12/13

Todays lesson me and Zahra finished off the audience research feedback and started talking and writing about our artists star image. We discussed what our artist would have and what would make him unique. We also talked about who inspired us to have that particular star image for our own artist.
We also discussed the way he is represented in media and how the audiences see him.

Tuesday 26 November 2013

26/11/13

In Today's lesson, me and Zahra went out and did our audience research. We went and asked a range of people both boys and girls to get a fair response. We roughly got the same answers from people but also some relevant answers which we needed. This audience questionnaire helped us gain a understanding of what the audiences wants to see in a music video and what type of things they like in a music video and not just what we want to put in the music video. This also helped us to get closer to the audiences and get their opinions on music videos.

Our schedule

Storyboard: Our storyboard is nearly finished. We are expecting it do be finished by the end of the week. 22/11/13.

Location: We have a couple of locations. A kitchen, living room, the park and the drama huts in our school. For us to use the drama huts we need to ask and book a room for the day we are going to be filming in that room.

Filming: We have planned to start shooting in 2 weeks time. Hopefully starting from 2/12/13 till the 20/12/13.

Props: We are planning to use the smoking machines for when we shot the scene in the drama huts. We will have to book this as well before we use it. We are also planning on getting a doll house for the little girl to throw and dishes and cups for the mom or dad to throw and break.

Costumes: We are not sure about the costumes yet but we are developing on our ideas right now.

Audience pitch: Our audience pitch will be done before we start filming and after we have done our storyboard.

Tuesday 19 November 2013

19/11/13

In todays lesson we planned our schedule. We planned the locations and where we are going to be shooting. We also decided when we are going to start shooting and when we will be finished with our storyboard. I think our storyboard will be finished by the end of this week so the 22nd. We also discussed the audience pitch idea. We are going to start asking around 10 people next week to get their feedback for our audience questionnaire. We also talked the main actor and the band and who will be in our music video. We then decided on the costumes that our main actor will be wearing; kind of smart but casual look.

Morashele

In Today's lesson we gave our presentation for our chosen band 'Morashele' and how we would market this band. We talked about how we would promote this band, so by web like through face book, twitter and instagram and how we would increase their fans. We also talked about the publicity i.e free gigs and concerts, small talks in universities to reach out to the wider audience, also making a you tube account to show off the skills that each of the people in this band has. We also talked about where they can go on e.g. the radio and TV shows like MTV where they can reach out to a younger audience, and we talked about their Cd cover and Digi pack and what we can do for the their first album cover design. This really helped us to get an understanding to how we can market and promote our own artist.

11/11/13

In Today's lesson we talked about marketing and how we would market a band. Our teacher gave us a list of band names and we have to chose and go off and do research on how we would market that band.
I think that this will help us gain more of an understanding of how we can market our own artist when it comes to the point where we have to think about it our self's.

Chosen director

My chosen director is Anthony Mandler.

Anthony Mandler is an American film director, music video director, television commercial director and photographer. As a music video director, his most notable and frequent collaborator is Rihanna. The two have worked on more than a dozen videos together throughout her career, starting with "Unfaithful" in 2006 and most recent "Only girl", "California king bed" and "man down". He has also written and directed music videos for many other famous artists like Jay Z, Beyonce, Eminem, Usher, Shakira, Taylor swift, Justin Bieber, Ne-yo, 50 cent, Nicki minaj and etc.
I have noticed from his videos like the ones he directed with Rihanna that he does a lot of closeups of her face. Like in the music video "Califiornia king bed" there is a lot of close ups of her and the male character in the video. This shows that they are really close and there isn't any separation. The colours that Mandler uses are all quite urban and calm colours. Nothing so bright or dark. It feels very warm like in the music video "California king bed" when she is walking around near the bed and the colour of the sun and background has that sort of calm feeling to it. Kind of like she is in heaven. Also the colours he uses for the video "only girl" kind of represents her in a kind of sense that she has the power and rules her own world, like the use of pink and red has that sense of power in the woman's world.

Here are the two 3 videos that Anthony Mandler directed with Rihanna.

Intertextuality

Intertextuality

Intertextuality is the shaping of a text meaning by another text. This can be either reflected in the style of the video or done in a humorous way like a parody. This can help audiences take further meaning away from a text. The three most frequent sources are cinema, fashion and art photography. So many music videos are drawn upon cinema as the starting point.
A great example of this is the music video Last Friday Night by Katy Perry

In this music video the director made it seem like it is a part of a movie. We know this by how in the beginning it starts off with credits and it carries on till the end. This creates a film like effect. Also how in the end they have the producers and directors and cast names in a list just like a movie has in the end of every film. Also all the characters are wearing clothes that were typically worn in the 80's. Also how they stop and actually have a scene where they are talking about what happened just like in films. Also how the artist looks onto a kind of social network page with her profile, its just like Facebook. It's acting as Facebook in the video.

Our chosen genre

Our genre that we have chosen is 'pop'. We choose this genre because we felt that we can make a more interesting music video and make it more fun. Pop is usually performance based, with frequent lip-sync. The routine is danced based or narrative reflecting the meaning or hidden meaning of the lyrics.
The key elements of our genre is the use of color, lighting and performance. In pop music videos you see, most of them really use color and lighting to make the music video more interesting and more exciting. They often make the performer dance or the center of a band to make it obvious that they are the main artist in the music video. Also the use of color that most music videos use are bright colors like yellow, pink, blue, orange to make it more vibrant and more upbeat. They also use a  range of camera movements like panning fast around them or zooming in and out of the performer. They use different editing techniques also to make it more obvious. We also chose this genre because we all music that has a beat in them. Something that's fast and upbeat. I think that even if we make a mistake  in making our music video, because of the music it will still be interesting and more exciting than using a slow song which can just end up being really boring.

Here are just two examples of famous pop artists:

Rihanna

Lady Gaga

Influences for our music video

Ideas for our Music Video

We have looked at a few videos in our music video genre, to help us get ideas for our own music video.
One of music videos we looked at was 'Where is the love?' by the Black Eyed Peas:

From this video we liked the idea of the children singing the lyrics (1:02) because it is a different approach to singing and not many artists use this technique.

The second video Devlin, runaway:

From this video we got the idea of using different stories with different age groups to use as a sort of a narrative.

We were also inspired by Jessie J 'Wild':

From this we liked the idea of the artist moving the camera with their hand, this inspired to use this technique but when the camera moves rather than move on to the next person it moves to a different scene of the video.

The final music video that we got inspiration from was One Republic 'Counting Stars':

From this video we got the idea of using the audience dancing but it isnt an obvious audience it just looks like people dancing. In our video we want the audience to be dancing around the artist and the band.

22/10/13

In todays lesson me and Zahra looked at a couple of music videos that gave us ideas for our own music video. We looked at the genre 'pop' and 'soul' which is our music video genre. We got a lot of ideas from different types of music videos like for example in the music video 'where is the love' by black eyed peas, they have a child singing to the lyrics which is something you don't see in a lot of music videos. We will like to use this idea in our music video as it is like a new technique and it's quite random.

Voyeurism

The male gaze

Sean Kingston- beat it

In the beginning of the music video, we are shown straight away the girls legs and body and the way the camera is showing us is by zooming in on the legs and moving the camera sort of up the girls leg and this represents the mans eyes looking up from the legs. From what I know most guys look at the girls legs first and this is representing it in that way. There is also a shot in the video where the camera focuses on one of the women's butt. They use the effect to make the background blurry and only make the girls booty look sharp. This shows that the male only looks at the girls bum and making it almost, so that the camera is the male persons eyes and is looking at her from the down angle. This is also a sign for the male gaze because boys tend to look at girls bums too. When we are shown a woman coming out from the pool, the camera first does a short shot of her side body and her side face first and then cuts to show a medium shot of her fall body coming out of the pool. This shows that the man looking up her body as she comes up from the pool. Also when we are shown the medium long shot of the woman together, they are all showing skin. A lot of it as well actually. Through out the whole video all the woman are showing skin either on the top or the bottom or even both. This also tells us that male people do look at woman in a certain way and this is how they represent woman to show that they are sexy and beautiful. The camera is always acting throughout the whole music video, as its actually a male person who is looking at the women. There's also a part where the camera tilts down on the woman's body and that's the view from a mans point. When the camera does close ups of the woman's faces, it shows how the male also looks at the woman's face. The camera again here acts like that it's a male person looking at the girl. Also when we are shown a overview shot of the woman lying down, it kind of seems like that's how the men see the woman when they are in bed with them. This is shown by the use of the panning of the camera slowly panning across the woman. This can also show that the man looks down on the woman and the man is more dominant. Shows a bit of the stereotype between men and woman.

My 10 favourite music videos

My chosen 10 music videos

Pitbull Christina Aguilera-feel this moment
  • I really like the use of multiple screens I think this makes much more interesting rather than just using one screen all the time.
  • I like the use of lighting in this video. They edited the lighting so that it goes with the beat in the music which I also feel its engaging to watch
  • I also like the way the editing pace fits with the beats of the music.
  • The use of a lot different camera angles, long shot and close ups.
  • Although this music video is in black and white, it gets me engaged because of the performance.

Katy Perry-roar
  • I really like the use of the long shots
  • I like the special effects that they used for the tiger when he was in the air.
  • The different camera movements they used were really good, they used a range of panning which I found very interesting
  • I also thought that the locations and they used for this music video really went will with the lyrics in the music.
  • I also felt that the storyline fitted very well.

Jessie J-wild
  • I really like how in the beginning the camera is moving with her footsteps.
  • I really like the different camera movements that fit with the music
  • Also the editing is very well fitted with the beat of the music as well
  • In the beginning where she moves the camera with her hands feels like she's actually engaging with us.
  • The panning around her and when she looks at the camera, lets me feel that she still is engaging with the audience.
  • Not many locations at all but the way the camera and editing is shown it doesn't look boring at all.
  • The use of turning the camera to let us know who is singing.
  • I really most of all just love her acting. Even though the music video is in black and white it still makes it interesting for me to watch because of her performance.

Ellie Goulding- I need your love
  • I like in the beginning when she's really looking into the camera
  • I like the use of handheld camera movements, it makes it look really realistic
  • The way they use handheld all the way is very different, so it gets me engaged
  • The use of camera movements is really good, a lot of different panning.
  • They really look in to the camera, that makes me feel that she is really trying to engage with the audience.

Demi Lovato- Heart attack
  • I really like the use of close ups in this music video
  • I like the way she looks into the camera a lot
  • I like the use of when she say 'glow' the lights turn on. The way they edited that goes with the lyrics.
  • The way the lighting and the editing go with the beat of the music
  • When we are shown a front shot of demi and the band, it tells us that okay that's the band that's playing the music. Its not that common in music videos.
  • I also really like the performance in this video, that gets me to watch the video more.

MKTO- Classic
  • I like the use of fast cuts in the beginning. To the person who's singing and back to let the audience know that there is two people.
  • They try and go back to the two shots of the performances to always let us know that its about these two people.
  • The use of lighting when they use the side shot is very effective.
  • In  the second chorus the colour of the background changes, not much done to it but its still effective, you don't really realise it.
  • They edit to the other guy to let us know who's signing now.
  • The use of camera movements is very good, its all matching with the music.
  • They always look into the camera as well. Again engaging with the audience

Jason Derulo- The other side
  • I really like the lighting used in this music video
  • I like the editing which matches with the beat of the music
  • I really like the different camera angles like the one from the bed

  • I really like the fast cuts they do and the use of fast paced editing
  • when they are dancing, I only see the main performer which I think is because he is really good at dancing.

Bruno mars-Just the way you are
  • I think the way he looks straight into the camera makes me feel that he has talking to me directly
  • I like the use of tape that they do and play around with effects.
  • How the image they make match with the lyrics is engaging also because its something unusual that they use that in a music video
  • the sun light they used makes my eyes go straight to that and that's where the performer is.
  • The camera shot from the back and the blur where they show the tap image again is very effective, its different
  • the close ups and the long short of him when he is on the piano is very good
  • I like it how they show the tape image of him playing the piano and then the camera pans up to show the performer really playing it so it seems more realistic.

Rihanna-we found love
  • the beginning, the close ups of her is really goof
  • the special effect of using speed goes with the music and I feel that this makes it really effective
  • I really like the use of colour. I feel like it really suits the performer
  • The performance I feel that it is amazing and it keeps me engaged all the way

What are the ingredients for a succesful music video?

The elements in making good music video

Editing
I feel that the editing is the most important in making a really good music video. I think that without the right use of effects it would look really boring and not so interesting for the audiences. Also I think that the editing should match with the beat of the music and the pace of the music. I feel that this will make it more exciting to watch and not so plain. I think also using different types of editing is very important. For example the spilt screen, you can put two clips in together and merge them. I think this effect is very effective that it will draw the audiences more. Even if you chose to use a kind of slow paced music, I think with the editing used very well it can make a slow boring music video into a actually quite decent and interesting video that people can get into.

Camera movements
I think that the camera movements are also very important. Depending on the genre of the music video, you need to use the camera differently e.g. indie rock. I think for the camera, you just need different camera angles which fits with the editing. This will make it more interesting and not boring to watch. Also using different camera movements is very important, like the panning or a close up. I feel that this will make the music video much more interesting than using the same camera movements. And I think using different camera shots, like a long shot or a medium shot or even a short shot. I think that this will make it more engaging for the audiences and will get them entertained to watch it.

Mis en scene
I think that mis en scene is as important as the editing. You need to have the right locations, props, costumes, makeup and cast to make it as interesting as possible. If you only have about 2 locations that you keep filming at, although you have a lot of good shots and editing it will still look a bit plain and boring. Also I feel that the costume is also important. You should match the costume that will suit with the music otherwise I think that really loses the appeal of the music video. For example, the music is about love and happiness but the actor/actress is wearing all black. That makes it seem like not a very happy music video although the song is because black usually means death and sadness. Also if the actor/actress is bad at acting, that will just make the music video unrealistic. And that will lose our audiences that I feel that the actor/actress is some of the reasons why the audiences get engaged into the music video in the first place. Like the music video 'wild' by Jessie J. The whole music video is in black and white but the actress Jessie J is amazing in the performance which makes us carry on watching the music video. It really good me engaged even though the music video was all in black and white.

Group feedback-ranking music videos

Group feedback.

Video
Why
1.       13B6-Ike & Tina- Jamie T

I really like this video because first of all the lip singing is really good. It actually seems like he’s singing it. There are also very good camera shoots like the use of the hand to turn the camera around. There were very good locations and the cuts matched with the beats in the music. I thought that this video was very fun to watch and all the quick cuts made me engaged to keep watching it more. I thought the acting was really good as well.
2.       13E4- If you wanna- The vaccines

The person who is the actor his very good. He suits with the music and the lip singing is good here too. The way they represented him was really good. I really like the spilt screen they use near the end of the video. I thought that, it made it very more interesting. I also think that the storyline fits well with the music lyrics. There is some good panning of the camera as well. The lighting is also quite good in this music video.
3.       13A2- Life happens- Brandon & leah

This video to me was very realistic. The girl suited very well with the music and the video and made me actually feel that it was her own music video that they made. Her lip singing was good as well and there were some good camera shots. The storyline for this video goes well with the music also.
4.       13A3-Nine2five- The ordinary boys

I thought for this video the acting was really good and that it suited with the beat of the music. The lip singing was also quite good and there were lots of different locations which made it less boring. There were really good camera shots and editing in the beginning.
5.       13E7-12 Rounds- Jester

The lip singing, the rap was really good in this video and it suited the actor. There were quite good camera angles and close ups in the video but there is a lack of location which made it a bit boring for me to watch.
6.       13E6- Go in, Go hard- Angle

There are some good shots on top of the building. The lighting in this video is okay but is too the same. There are some good locations and some of the camera movements are good. The lip singing was okay but it wasn’t great.
7.       13E9- Today I cried- Professor green

The spilt screen in this music video was really good. The cuts matched the music in the beat and there were some good locations. There were also some good camera shots. He seemed like he was actually singing it. The random clips of a film are a bit strange and it doesn’t really make sense but it wasn’t as bad. The actor doesn’t really look into the camera.
8.       13A1- Sparks fly- Taylor swift

In the beginning there were good camera shots of the feet. There were some good shots and close ups but some shots didn’t really make sense and some were a bit confusing. There were some good editing going on but it was a bit boring because they didn’t have much of a range of edits. I also thought that the lip singing was quite bad; I think it looked too fake.
9.       13B1-Rewind- Paolo Nutini

The setting matched with the music video. There wasn’t much singing shown but the actor suited the role. There were too many long and medium shots. This made it boring for me to watch. The 2 girls at the end I really didn’t understand and it made me confused.
10.   13B3- What we started- J R Aquino

There is a good storyline and some good camera shots. The lip singing was bad but it went with the lyrics. I didn’t really understand the random London shot. But the bridge shot was quite good. It was a bit boring for me.
11.   13B4- Lost- Paper aeroplanes

There were some good locations and there some good shots in the beach. I thought that the lighting was really bad, It looked too dull and boring for me and it wasn’t really interesting. It was kind of just longing on the shot which made it more boring to watch.

 My own response.
How will you avoid these issues?

I will try and use a lot of different range and style of camera movements not just short, medium and long shots but other range of shots like a panning shot. I will also when we are doing this in a group, to pick an actor who is confident and who we think will match with the music well and that it suits the person. I would like to use a spilt shot in my music video as I find this very interesting. I think to use more quick shots and making the editing very quick and not dragging it on for too long will make less boring and more fun to watch. Also with the lighting, I will change the lighting for clips that may need the lighting changed either to more brighter or even more darker. I want to make sure our music video has a good storyline that fits with our chosen music and to use a range of locations and not just the same locations because that makes it boring for the viewer.

Evaluation from 3 blogs last year

Evaluation for the 3 blogs I looked at.

1. Rihanna's AS Media

What did they do in their planning and research?
This person for their research made her own storyboard first before even talking about what to do in what scene. She made her own so they can put their individual ideas together when they come together again. This person had group meetings as well to talk more in detail about their initial idea and what they were going to do. They talked about the location and the casts for their film. They also discussed the genre they would do for their opening sequence. Then they got together and made in more detail their storyboard about where and what they will shot in each scene. She then wrote up their synopsis and her personal response on it. For the research she started to look at the distribution companies and the promotion.

What did they do in their actual filming?
This groups filming had to be very organised as they had a lot of locations that they had to film and there were a lot of people they had to coordinate. They said that not everyone was available at the same day but everyone had a go in the filming.

What did they do in their actual editing?
They spend a lot of time uploading the clips on to final cut express safely and properly. They started to roughly cut the shots to what they needed as they had a lot of film footage. While they were editing they started thinking about the mood of the sound and the music. They were able to cut down to 2mins as it was too long before. When they started editing the sound they experienced with many different sounds. For their credits they used a lot of scrabbled pieces like paper on the fridge for the film.

2. Lauren Elaine Vlahos

What did they do in their planning and research?
This person made her own story board of her film. She made a personal response of her storyline and her groups response on it. For the research she looked at the actors and the genre of her film. She also looked at the location of where they can film their sequence. They mostly chose to shot outside as it looks more scary. They also did a audience research on the genre and most people liked the genre horror/thriller especially teens/adult years. She also researched different types of lighting. She also researched the codes and conventions for opening sequences. She looked into film productions and companies and the research for the sound. Also she looked at the camera movements for the chosen genre.

What did they do in their actual editing?
Her group had an incident where their editing disappeared so they had to import their clips back onto the computer. Straight after they started to put it in the right order. While editing they found something new that you can enlarge the part so you can see it better. They tried out the sound. They tested the sound clips on garage band. The final editing they did was the lighting and the speed. By using the colour tool they adjusted the lighting. They speeded up the killer clips so that the audience can see the pace of the killer.

What did they do in their actual filming?
For their actual shooting they made shooting schedule and wrote on what day they are going to do this and that and also the time for each shooting schedule. They also wrote down the casts and the roles of each cast.

3. Zainab Media As coursework

What did they do in their planning and research?
This person looked at the codes and conventions of a thriller film. He also looked at the initial ideas for their film. He also looked the importance in sound as music plays a key part in the movies. He also did background research on the chosen genre. They made a practise storyboard for their idea and their storyline. He also looked at his own response to his group choice.

What did they do in their actual filming and editing?
When they filmed there opening sequence they realised that although the filming they have done is in good quality the lighting is too bright and it gets that chilling feeling away. For the editing they found that the editing they have done was too long so they had to cut it down a lot. This person concentrated a lot on the lighting as this creates the atmosphere.

What did they do that you think was effective and what are your plans to use this knowledge this time?

I think the way they did the layout of the blog was very effective and it made me interested to look at it. But however the colour of the blogs seemed a bit dark to me and the layout all though it was good was a bit confusing so I got a bit bored after a while. The presentation was really good and I would like to make the presentation more appealing next time on my own blog. The way they wrote their analyses was not too much information that I was not interested in to read and not too short where I would think that not much thought was put into it, it was just in the middle and it made me want to read it. But some of the posts were long and that kind of put me off to read it so I am going to try on my blog to keep it simple but still in a little detail but not too much information and add pictures to make it more interesting.

Final music video short version

This is our short clip music video. Our song that we used is called Oh no by Marina and the diamonds. We chose to use this song because we wanted something upbeat and exciting and it matched well with our idea so we decided on this song. I think this song is not as upbeat as other songs but it is still upbeat for a music video song.

Evaluation for music video

Evaluation

What went wrong?
We didn't get to storyboard it well so we didn't really know where we had to start when we were filming and editing.

What worked?
The editing that we did worked quite well and also the colourisation for the clips worked well as well.

What you should have done?
we should have matched the editing to the beat of the music more and also should have used more fast paced editing in the chorus to make it more effective.

What you plan to do next time differently?
Make sure that we edit to the beat of the music more to make the music video more interesting for people to watch and also to add different paces of different clips, like do slow and fast paced to make it even more eye catching. Also to add more colour to some clips to make them stand out more than the other clips like for example the chorus.

What went wrong?
We had to film it 3 times due to the match on actions and lightings and the continuity issues because no clips would match.  We also had issues with our actresses, not being available and all. The last time that we had to film again was because on that weekend our school got robbed and they toke all of our computers and so went our work as well.  We had so many problems with the music because we just couldn't find anything to match with our video. Also the credits and titles were quite bad as we didn't know how to do it, as in the font, colour and style of the writing.

What went well?
The flashbacks that we used were really effective, and despite the problems our sequence was quite effective in the end and we were able to make a decent opening sequence.

What you should have done?
We should have, while we were filming, look back at what we were filming and if there were any problems we should have fixed it then. Also we should have followed the storyboard more and we also thought that we could of done more with the costumes by planing it more in advance. We should have allowed time to finish a rough cut and from there if there were any problems to fix it, then we wouldn't of had as many problems as we did.

What do you plan to do next time differently?
Plan everything before hand and actually follow the plan and not just do whatever we like because that led us into a lot of problems. We should have a time schedule for when we are going to shoot or edit or when we are going to come and look at the clips we got. Also to split the group blog work to make it more equal.
